Biles

Biles is a Belltaine native, war veteran, and low-sequence Sailor-pathway Beyonder who helps resolve the Trunsoest Brass Book's legal anomaly. A later Utopia policeman named Biles is one of Klein's marionettes and is not established as the same person.

Biography

Life in Klein's Era

Biles returns to Belltaine with Roy, Phil, and Pasha to look for surviving relatives and friends after the war. When the town's new laws turn hostile, he stays with the group and reacts immediately after Phil loses a hand, preserving the severed limb in a wooden box rather than freezing under pressure. His wartime experience and local identity make him both a practical protector and a citizen still covered by the artifact's contradictory rules. (Chapters 1281–1282)

After Merlin grants the group protective wishes, Biles accepts the most dangerous part of the plan: as a Belltaine citizen, he flips the brass book even though touching it normally invites punishment. The contradiction between the artifact's protection of citizens and its ban on contact exposes and helps seal it. Klein later removes only the group's memories of 0-02 and escorts them out, leaving Biles alive. The identically named policeman seen later in Utopia is explicitly part of Klein's constructed marionette town, so those scenes do not extend this Biles's biography. (Chapters 1287–1290, 1336–1344)

Appearance and personality

Biles is under thirty, tanned, and modestly muscular from mining and military service. He is decisive in emergencies, loyal to his companions, and willing to trust a dangerous plan once he understands why his own position is essential to it. (Chapters 1281–1282, 1287–1288)

Pathways and abilities

Biles belongs to the Sailor pathway at a low Sequence, though his precise potion title is not stated. He manifests illusory fish scales and has the endurance and close-combat competence expected of a veteran Beyonder; the Belltaine operation depends more on his citizenship and resolve than on a spectacular power. (Chapters 1282, 1288)

Relationships

Roy, Phil, and Pasha are Biles's trusted companions from the war and the Belltaine defense. He follows Merlin's plan after the wandering magician demonstrates both power and concern for the group, then loses the artifact-specific memory for his own protection. (Chapters 1281, 1287–1290)

Items

Biles uses an ordinary wooden box to preserve Phil's severed hand. He handles the Trunsoest Brass Book only as part of the sealing plan and never owns it. (Chapters 1282, 1288)
