Biography

Cordu, Trier, and the Approaching Apocalypse

Baynfel was a penitent spirit-world entity selected as Lumian's messenger. He reliably carried letters across great distances and, unlike many contracted creatures, communicated directly and accepted requests without theatrical hostility. When Lumian later sought an additional Inevitability contract, Baynfel allowed him to inspect the offered powers and choose whether the exchange was worth its negative effect (Chapters 1940–2143)

Lumian selected Shadow Animation and surrendered a mystical item as payment. The contract's price made him witness dangerous truths in places connected to Baynfel's past, exposing a hidden link between the penitent, a True Creator cathedral, and the lizard-like elves. Baynfel continued serving as messenger after that revelation and remained active through the late-apocalypse missions (Chapters 2143–2210, 2237–2286, 2494)

Appearance and personality

Baynfel is abnormally tall and resembles a charred corpse wearing a black clergyman's robe. Only a thin layer of burned skin clings to his bones, while black flames form his eyes and cling to his body. He is solemn, taciturn, forthright, and transactional without being petty; his title and bearing suggest enduring penitence for a past the corpus reveals only indirectly (Chapters 1940–2143)

Pathways and abilities

Baynfel's traits correspond to an Ancient Corpse rather than a confirmed human potion history. He can traverse the spirit world, carry messages, and use Shadow Animation, which makes another shadow act as a substitute. Losing that substitute exposes the contractor to a temporary fear of sunlight. Scenes tied to Baynfel's history also trigger involuntary truth-visions under Lumian's contract; this is a negative effect, not a freely controlled divination power (Chapters 2143, 2167–2169)
