Biography

Testing a hidden teacher

Zheng approaches the Yang residence expecting to settle Sun Qiang's conduct, but the mansion's arrangements and the disguised Zhang Xuan's diagnoses persuade him that the supposed master may exceed the visiting teachers. He presents a long-standing cultivation problem as a test and follows the group's subsequent investigation of Zhang Xuan's teaching. Observing Zheng Yang's spear work and the students' rapid improvement, Zheng Fei concludes that the instructional theory is sound and that genuine student affection—not the pursuit of reputation—distinguishes an effective teacher. (Chapters 168–219)

Appearance and personality

He is a formal, cautious master teacher who initially supports a stern response to Sun Qiang. Unlike a rigid skeptic, he changes his judgment when the residence and the students provide better evidence. (Chapters 168–185 and 195–219)

Abilities and cultivation

Zheng Fei's displayed strengths are cultivation diagnosis, educational evaluation, and the authority of a recognized master teacher. His own unresolved cultivation problem is what he uses to test the disguised Yang Xuan. (Chapters 168–190)
