Biography

A champion becomes a student-observer

Zhao and runner-up Liu Changyan watch the public duel expecting their academy's established talents to define the standard. The crude-looking battle arts and sudden breakthroughs produced by “Sun Qiang's” lesson repeatedly overturn their analysis. Rather than reject the evidence, Zhao attends the disguised teacher's lecture, benefits from it, and helps carry him back to the classroom after the strain of instruction. (Chapters 329–369)
