Biography
The Wu Dao Mirror challenge
Angered when Zhang Xuan dismisses her painting, Zhang Ziqing proposes a wager and uses an imitation Wu Dao Mirror to judge their works without personal preference. Zhang Xuan's seemingly empty sword strokes produce an artistic conception beyond what she can initially perceive, leaving the mirror and her conventional standards unable to account for his result. The challenge ends with Zhang Ziqing frightened by the larger upheaval around his visit rather than securing the apology she expected. (Chapters 1,436–1,447)
