Biography

Appraiser of strange phenomena

Liu Chang is called upon when valuable objects produce effects that ordinary observers cannot interpret. Drawing on his professional training, he attempts to explain the artifacts' provenance, behavior, and likely worth. The conclusions reached by Zhang Xuan repeatedly go further, but Liu Chang's participation supplies the accepted appraisal framework against which those discoveries can be measured. He remains a professional witness rather than an antagonist. (Chapters 449–459)
