Biography

The physician and the borrowed name

Zhang Xuan flatters him, buys his herbs, knocks him unconscious, and borrows his emblem and appearance to enter the Great Herb King's manor. The later 'Bai Chan' who cures Gu Mu and is mistaken for a mysterious senior is Zhang Xuan in disguise, not the original physician; the real Bai Chan's later activities are not shown. Appearance and personality

Bai Chan is avaricious, lustful by reputation, and receptive to flattery, traits that make the identity easy to appropriate. (Chapters 266–269, 271–317, 430)

Abilities and cultivation

His one-star medical knowledge and emblem grant access ordinary travelers lack. All extraordinary healing attributed to the name afterward belongs to Zhang Xuan. (Chapters 266–269, 271–317, 430)

Relationships

Mo Yu knows the original and warns Zhang Xuan about him. Gu Mu encounters only the disguised Zhang Xuan and therefore constructs a false lineage around Bai Chan's name. (Chapters 266–269, 271–317, 430)
