The Talker

The Talker is an intelligent, human-looking Specter that feeds by socially exhausting people through uninterrupted conversation. Under the name Jayjay, it combines polished friendliness with escalating violence whenever a conversational partner tries to disengage. (Chapters 395–399)

Biography

Conversation under containment

Dark Dream receives the Talker as an Early Adult capable of producing exceptional Zephyx, making it Nick's principal route toward further advancement. Nick must sustain high-quality conversation for eight-hour sessions without pausing to think, rest, eat, drink, or divert attention; attempts to end a session cause Jayjay to escalate from social pressure to blades and torture. Through repeated exposure, Nick learns that the Talker forgets older conversations and does not develop new attack patterns, allowing consistent answers and a carefully timed retreat while still talking. The routine helps the Talker advance to Mid Adult and makes it one of Dark Dream's greatest Zephyx producers, but no later chapter establishes its condition after the company changes hands. Appearance and personality

The Talker resembles a brightly smiling young blond man wearing a white shirt and black trousers. It introduces itself with an elaborate name and maintains a professional, charismatic manner while conversation continues. That charm is inseparable from an inflexible compulsion: it cannot accept silence, repeats the same behavior despite prior defeats, and appears unable to retain new long-term information. The text describes it as intelligent but not sane. (Chapters 395–397)

Abilities and Zephyx

The Talker gains power by socially exhausting an attentive conversational partner. Lies are acceptable if they remain consistent, but pauses and low-effort responses provoke light slaps, then nails, broken limbs, and further torture until speech resumes or the victim can no longer respond. It has no need to sleep, eat, or drink and can continue for years. When Nick tries to leave, blades emerge from its hands and it attacks with Early Adult speed; closing the Containment Unit ends the pursuit and resets its composed behavior. (Chapters 395–397)

Relationships

• Nick: Nick becomes the Talker's regular conversational partner, learning to manage its memory limitation and predictable aggression while relying on its production for advancement. (Chapters 395–399)
• Dreamer: The Dreamer is the only Dark Dream Specter shown producing more Zephyx, even though the Talker works fewer hours and initially holds a higher rank. (Chapter 398)
