The Screaming Coffin

The Screaming Coffin is a barely conscious Possession Specter that animates a coffin and consumes corpses. The Parasite sells its location to Dark Dream, giving the young company a predictable Specter whose dangerous food supply can be obtained without sacrificing living workers. (Chapters 73–75)

Biography

Capture in the sewers

The Parasite reports the Screaming Coffin because it has begun swimming through the lowest sewers and consuming the same corpses that sustain his rats. Dark Dream delays capture until its recent corpse purchases will not alert the guards, then sends Nick to secure it. Its bandages reach for him without urgency, and its primitive mind retreats when one is torn away; Nick's much stronger body lets him overpower the Early Hatchling and bring it into containment. The capture removes a competitor for the Parasite while giving Dark Dream a new source of income. (Chapters 73–75)

Work under Dark Dream

In containment, the Coffin is placated with bodies and produces roughly thirty grams of Zephyx over a little more than a day. That return is modest beside Dark Dream's later Specters, yet it helps support guards and early operations. Because the possessed coffin cannot fold itself for transport, the company must move it physically when facilities change. A later theory proposes that it originated from someone sealed in a coffin and abandoned in the sewers, but the narrative explicitly treats that explanation as speculation, not confirmed history. (Chapters 116, 172, 359, 386, 394, 422, and 441)

Appearance and personality

It appears as a coffin wrapped in animate bandages. When disturbed, the coffin releases a piercing scream that explains its name. As a Possession Specter inhabiting an object, it has only a rudimentary consciousness: its bandages respond to nearby prey and pain, but it shows neither conversation nor a developed temperament. (Chapter 75)

Abilities and Zephyx

The Screaming Coffin moves through liquid, extends slow bandages to seize a target, and draws corpses inside to consume them. The same feeding makes it produce Zephyx in containment. Its grasp is weak enough that Nick can tear individual bandages free, its reactions are slow, and damage quickly makes it abandon an attack. Those limitations make the Early Hatchling comparatively manageable when supplied with corpses. (Chapters 73–75 and 116)

Relationships

  • Parasite: The Parasite sells its location because its corpse consumption competes with his rats' food supply. (Chapter 73)
  • Nick: Nick captures the Coffin by exploiting its slow bandages and limited consciousness. (Chapter 75)
  • Wyntor Melfion: Wyntor schedules the capture around Dark Dream's corpse purchases and turns the Specter into an early company asset. (Chapters 73 and 116)

Items

  • No separate personal items: The coffin and bandages constitute the Possession Specter's body rather than an inventory of carried objects. (Chapter 75)
