The Puppy

The Puppy is a Physical Specter whose harmless appearance and apparent affection induce people to embrace it while it drains their vitality. Nick captures and names it, then gradually recognizes that its charm makes even routine contact dangerous. (Chapters 179 and 196)

Biography

Capture, containment, and transfer

The Puppy first appears as a dirty but appealing animal that readily attracts Investigators and begs Nick to hold it. When repeated contact makes Nick ill, the group realizes the affection is part of a lethal feeding pattern; surrounded by stronger Extractors, the Puppy becomes hostile and can still hurt people through a Zephyx Suppressor. Nick contains and names it, then tests employees' reactions to determine whether its charm is manipulative. Dark Dream restricts work to sufficiently strong Extractors, eventually moves its containment as the risk becomes clearer, and helps it reach Early Adolescent rank. After its production requires three Johns, Dark Dream transfers responsibility for its containment to Ghosty's Lab in exchange for another Specter. Nick misses working with it, but the Puppy's later condition is not shown. (Chapters 179, 196, 374, 398, and 456)

Appearance and personality

The Puppy resembles a small, fluffy white dog with wet eyes and an ingratiating whimper or bark. It presents itself as affectionate and eager to be hugged, but its behavior changes when capture becomes unavoidable. Because its charm may directly manipulate observers, the corpus does not establish whether the displayed affection is sincere emotion, deliberate hunting behavior, or an automatic aspect of its power. (Chapter 179)

Abilities and Zephyx

The Puppy appears to convert a victim's vitality into Zephyx through physical closeness, making prolonged holding cause sickness and pain. Its charm creates a strong desire to pet or embrace it, though Nick cannot initially determine the precise manipulative mechanism. A Zephyx Suppressor reduces but does not fully stop its effect. Extractors synchronized with it can scream to tear Zephyx from anyone touching them, making contact both the activation condition and the ability's principal limitation. (Chapters 179 and 196)

Relationships

  • Nick: Nick is drawn into holding the Puppy, identifies the resulting illness, organizes its capture, and names it. He later regards it fondly despite recognizing its danger. (Chapters 179, 196, and 456)
  • Ghosty: Ghosty's Lab accepts responsibility for the Puppy's later containment as part of an exchange between Manufacturers; no subsequent interaction is narrated. (Chapter 456)

Items

  • No named item is associated with the Puppy. The Zephyx Suppressor used during its capture belongs to the Extractors' containment equipment, not to the Specter. (Chapter 179)
