Albert
Albert Eibrecht is an experienced Zephyx Extractor and researcher whose decision to seek out and mentor Nick gives Nick the knowledge and opportunity to begin his career. His practical guidance helps establish Dark Dream's first extraction process, while their later dispute over morality and political power ends the relationship shortly before Albert mysteriously disappears. (Chapters 3, 29–39, 337–346, and 837)
Biography
Finding and preparing Nick
Albert became involved with Nick after his friend Ghosty noticed the unusual results in Nick's rejected application to Ghosty's Lab. Interested in the unexplained ability behind those results, Albert searched the Dregs until he found Nick, then spent several months analyzing his power, teaching him to read, and preparing him for work as a Zephyx Extractor. Before leaving, Albert told Nick to remain visible because an employer would come looking for someone like him; Nick trusted that promise, and it led directly to his meeting with Wyntor Melfion and the founding of Dark Dream. (Chapters 3, 5–6, and 837)
Albert's mentorship extended beyond technical instruction. He recognized Nick as an unusually idealistic survivor of the Dregs and described that empathy to others, but he also disclosed the mechanics of Nick's highly vulnerable ability to Julian Winter, whom Julian claimed was a close friend. Nick regarded that disclosure as a betrayal even though Albert's motive is never supplied, creating an early breach in a relationship that Nick otherwise continued to regard as foundational to his life. (Chapters 38 and 128)
Dark Dream's first extraction
When Dark Dream captured the Dreamer, Wyntor asked Albert to guide Nick through his first attempt to work with a Specter. Albert inspected the Containment Unit, used a small amount of powerful healing liquid to restore the injured Dreamer, and physically restrained it when it attacked. He then demonstrated a coercive negotiation: he explained the mutual benefits of controlled Zephyx production, warned that refusal would result in its body being repeatedly processed, and afterward admitted to Nick that Dark Dream did not yet own the equipment needed to carry out that threat. The combination of expertise, improvisation, and calculated bluffing secured an opening for cooperation without pretending the Specter could be trusted. (Chapters 29–32)
Albert spent the following hours teaching Nick how Specters feed, why mentality-based Specters are especially manipulative, and how the Extractor and Specter level systems are organized. He deliberately refused to accompany Nick into the next negotiation, placing responsibility on him as Chief Zephyx Extractor while remaining at the console to monitor the Dreamer's Prephyx and Zephyx output. Nick successfully completed an eight-hour session, and Albert translated the five grams produced into operating costs, recovery needs, and realistic personal income before crediting the result to Nick. This turned instruction into an actual production method and left Dark Dream capable of operating after Albert departed. (Chapters 31–39)
A wager and a disappearance
Albert later left Ghosty's Lab for confidential research that the city considered important. By the time Nick visited him again, Albert described a career of more than eighty years spent mostly working assigned Specters, followed by service in the city's forces and research with a small team on the upper layer. He had extensive theoretical knowledge but admitted that he had rarely captured Specters or fought for his life; his research team nevertheless studied Old World technologies that Crimson City's experts could barely interpret. When the visibly troubled Nick arrived at his home, Albert welcomed him, listened to the account of Dark Dream's growth, and tried to draw out the help Nick appeared to need. (Chapters 212, 340–342, and 375)
The visit had hidden stakes: Julian had wagered that Nick would come to Albert's home, so Nick's arrival caused Albert to lose without Albert knowing what was being decided. Their conversation then became an argument over corruption, dictatorship, sacrifice, and whether morality was objective. Albert warned that concentrated power would destroy freedom and rejected Nick's willingness to justify killing a minority to save a majority; when Nick challenged Albert's comfortable life, Albert saw the accusation as ingratitude and ordered him out. Nick left more committed to Julian's program, while Albert had unknowingly become vulnerable to Julian's power. During the later construction of the Hell Gates, Albert vanished while serving as a supervising builder. The corpus does not show what happened to him or explicitly identify Julian as the cause. (Chapters 336–346)
Appearance and personality
Albert has mostly black hair broken by grey streaks. He looks approximately in his fifties, although Nick estimates that his true age is over one hundred because he is an Expert and has changed little across the five years between their meetings. He initially appears in a cloak, and his later home—an austere black-metal house filled with books but warmed by an expensive fire—reflects both his research-centered life and his attachment to selected comforts. (Chapters 29 and 340–341)
In professional settings, Albert is jovial, teasing, and fond of theatrical demonstrations: he jokes with the Dreamer, mischievously heals it ahead of schedule, and uses humor to make dense instruction approachable. That informality coexists with caution and bluntness. He insists that Specters cannot be treated as friends, makes Nick assume responsibility rather than sheltering him, and acknowledges that his own experience is more theoretical than combative. His concern for Nick is genuine enough that he recognizes the younger man's distress, but his rigid belief in objective morality and defensiveness about his privileged life turn their last discussion into a final rupture. (Chapters 29–33, 38, and 341–344)
Abilities and Zephyx
Albert is a level four Zephyx Extractor, informally called an Expert, with the Torturer's ability and decades of experience working with Specters. The corpus establishes formidable physical power, a flexible tool-conjuring ability, and broad technical knowledge, but it does not narrate his advancement to Expert or identify a later formal rank. (Chapters 29, 33, 164, and 341)
Expert physique and defense
As an Expert, Albert claims he could kill the level-one Dreamer with a casual kick and demonstrates a matching disparity in force: he catches its head with one hand, remains motionless while it repeatedly strikes him, and suffers no visible injury as its talons produce a metallic impact. The passage does not identify whether that defense comes from his body, Barrier, equipment, or another effect, so it cannot be assigned to a more specific mechanism. His power is not absolute; Nick later judges Julian, a Specialist one level above him, capable of attacking in a way Albert could neither perceive nor defend against. (Chapters 29–30 and 340)
Torturer's ability
Albert possesses the ability granted by the Torturer, an Elder Specter owned by Kugelblitz. The ability generally spends Zephyx to conjure durable, deadly tools and can evolve along many different paths; the narrative infers from Albert's possession of it that Kugelblitz probably recruited him before he formally became an Extractor. Nick also remembers Albert summoning several hovering objects and notes his fondness for tools, but the text does not explicitly identify those objects as Torturer constructs, reveal Albert's chosen evolution, or show him using the ability in combat. (Chapters 5 and 164)
Specter handling and research
Albert's strongest demonstrated specialty is controlled Specter work. He can interpret containment-console readings, use a sensitive mobile Prephyx scanner to distinguish hostility from other activity, assess Specter recovery, and match an extraction method to a Specter's feeding behavior. His handling of the Dreamer combines physical suppression, psychological bargaining, conversion-rate management, and continuous monitoring; he also identifies the mental exhaustion produced by its nightmares and warns that a worker can die quietly if pushed too far. These methods are grounded in decades of assigned extraction work rather than frequent captures or battles. (Chapters 29–39, 49, and 341)
After leaving ordinary extraction work, Albert applies that knowledge as a city researcher. His team investigates Old World technology, although even they often cannot identify what the devices were designed to do, establishing both the breadth and the limit of his expertise. He later serves as a supervising builder on the bridge through the Crimson Sea, but his disappearance ends the record before any further research result or improvement in his abilities is established. (Chapters 346 and 375)
Relationships
- Nick: Albert seeks Nick out, analyzes his strange ability, teaches him basic literacy and Extractor work, and creates the opening through which he joins Wyntor. Their mutual regard survives years of separation, but Albert's disclosure of Nick's ability and their later moral argument damage that trust; Nick's final visit also unknowingly fulfills Julian's wager against Albert. (Chapters 3, 6, 128, 336, and 340–344)
- Ghosty: Ghosty is Albert's friend and former superior at Ghosty's Lab. He alerts Albert to Nick's anomalous application, while later remembering Albert as one of the best Extractors who worked for him. (Chapters 212 and 837)
- Wyntor Melfion: Albert helps connect Wyntor with Nick and later answers Wyntor's request to establish a safe working method for Dark Dream's first Specter. Wyntor treats him respectfully and thanks him for making the initial extraction possible. (Chapters 5–6, 29, and 38–39)
- Julian Winter: Julian presents Albert as a close friend after Albert tells him about Nick's ability. Julian later makes a wager designed to be lost when Nick visits Albert, placing Albert at a severe disadvantage; whether Julian directly caused Albert's subsequent disappearance is not shown. (Chapters 128, 336, 340, and 346)
- Dreamer: Albert treats the captive Dreamer as both a dangerous opponent and a production partner whose incentives must be controlled. He restrains it, bargains with it, and leaves the continuing relationship to Nick once a workable process exists. (Chapters 29–34)
Items
- No named signature item is established for Albert. The mobile Prephyx scanner, high-grade healing liquid, and processing device used during Dark Dream's first extraction are professional tools, and the corpus does not identify any of them as a notable personal possession. (Chapters 29–30)
