Countess Dewinter's Portal Device is a compact relic once used by military commanders to move forces between battlefields on different worlds. Dewinter trades it to Wolfe during the restoration of her estate, giving him a portable route home and a tool for testing interworld travel.

History

The Dewinter family relic

After Wolfe agrees to restore the Dewinter estate's defenses and help its displaced people, the Countess has a retainer bring her a small box. Inside is a small portal device from her family's history, identified as the kind military commanders used to move troops between battlefields on different worlds. She offers it as payment, and Wolfe accepts the relic as his new “toy.” (Chapters 903–904)

The transfer is a trade, not a temporary loan. Countess Dewinter relinquishes the artifact to obtain durable protection and recovery for her estate, while Wolfe gains a possible route back to his own world. No later passage returns it to the Dewinter family. (Chapters 903–910)

Anchors and the Luton portal experiment

Wolfe later learns about travel Anchors, objects left at a destination so a portal user can sense it across great distances without complex calculations. He immediately recognizes that an Anchor would complement the minor portal device already in his possession. (Chapter 928)

At Luton University, Wolfe uses the relic during a portal-formation lesson to test whether it can find Forest Grove's trial grounds from inside the unusual time-looped environment. The device locates the destination after mana is supplied and helps the prepared formation open successfully. The scene demonstrates that the portable relic can work with a larger portal array rather than replacing every part of one. (Chapters 945–946)

Properties and limitations

  • The device is designed to open or guide portals across worlds and was historically suitable for military troop movement. (Chapter 903)
  • It is portable and small enough to be presented in a small box. The source does not establish its material, shape, color, controls, or decorative style.
  • Accurate travel still benefits from a known Anchor, which reduces the calculations and focus required to identify a distant destination. (Chapter 928)
  • Wolfe tests the device against the trial grounds' time loop rather than assuming it can ignore spatial protections. Prepared formations, a valid destination, and supplied mana remain relevant. (Chapters 945–946)
  • The artifact is not interchangeable with United World portal hardware, fixed university arrays, Asmodain's spatial storage, or the innate portal magic of powerful Fae and Demons.
