Pup

Pup is Mary Morris's enormous white Pyrenees Familiar. Although scanners identify him as an ordinary dog, his strong bond, physical courage, and sustained exposure to Wolfe's mana make him one of the Academy cohort's most capable early Familiars.

Biography

Academy Familiar

Mary summons and names Pup before introducing him to Wolfe. Already roughly two hundred pounds of fluff and muscle, he becomes transport, pillow, guard, and emotional anchor for the tiny Witch. He reluctantly lets Mary ride him, races other Familiars, sprawls over friends, and makes his own preferences clear through growls, looks, and refusal, including biting the first person who proposes sending him to assist a lower class. (Chapters 27, 31–38, and 46)

Pup develops a comfortable relationship with Wolfe because lying against him provides a steady overflow of mana. That passive growth makes Pup and Flame the strongest ordinary Familiars among the early students, but the text continues to identify Pup as a regular dog rather than secretly assigning him another species. His apparent Wind talent helps Mary's mist work, while his most consistent traits remain appetite, warmth, loyalty, and an aversion to unnecessary exertion. (Chapters 49–75)

Battlefield injury and recovery

During the front-line collapse, Pup takes five Null Stone bullets while protecting Mary. The anti-magic ammunition collapses their auras and prevents normal healing until Wolfe's group removes the rounds; Pup loses substantial blood and remains unconscious even after Cassie stabilizes him. He is evacuated with Mary because their recovery and bond cannot be treated separately, making his protective instinct one of the clearest consequential choices made by a Familiar in the campaign. (Chapters 155–156)

Pup later returns with Mary under a temporary enlargement spell, appearing horse-sized and pulling a sled through the Wastes. The spell's residue is externally visible and consumes enough energy to make him extremely hungry; once it ends, he remains larger than at summoning but is not given a named evolution. His sled work makes the recovered Familiar a practical part of Forest Grove's travel network rather than merely a campus companion. (Chapters 210–215)

Forest Grove companion

In Forest Grove, Pup becomes Ember's reluctant canine friend and can be found in the hot springs, common rooms, and Familiar ceremonies. He dislikes Mary's plan to summon another companion and is horrified when she eventually calls a Nekomata, but remains at her side. Later scenes place him beside Mary at Rank Three celebrations, Academy visits, treaty work, and the Saint celebration, still napping with Ember when the city gathers. (Chapters 215–216, 239, 252–254, 315–317, 484, 823, 964, and 1053)

Appearance and personality

Pup is a bright-white, extremely fluffy Pyrenees, already about two hundred pounds when first seen and roughly three times Mary's size. He later grows substantially and can be enlarged to horse size by Witch magic. He is lazy, food-driven, warm, jealous of attention, and expressive despite not speaking aloud. Those comic traits coexist with a willingness to place his own body between Mary and lethal fire. (Chapters 31, 38, 71–75, 83, 155, and 212–215)

Magic, skills, and limitations

Familiar bond and mana

Pup shares a high-compatibility Familiar bond with Mary and can absorb excess mana by resting against Wolfe. His connection supports Mary's magic, including a surprising Wind contribution, but he does not force mana into her on request and has no narrated spell catalogue. Mary's Witch ranks cannot be copied onto him. (Chapters 34, 49–51, 65, and 71–75)

Protection and travel

His size and strength allow Mary to ride him, let him pull a sled, and make him an effective physical guard. Snow-white fur provides incidental camouflage, while smell and canine awareness help the group. He remains vulnerable to anti-magic weapons, blood loss, exhaustion, and ordinary bodily needs; his horse-sized travel form is a temporary external spell, not a permanent formal breakthrough. (Chapters 31, 72, 92, 106, 155–156, and 212–215)

Communication

Pup communicates through posture, looks, growls, and his bond. Wolfe often understands him unusually well, and Mary later translates one side of his interactions with Ember, but Pup does not acquire speech in the supplied corpus. His resistance to Mary's second summoning shows agency without turning him into a humanlike speaker. (Chapters 36–38, 62, 216, and 252–254)

Relationships

  • Mary Morris: Mary is Pup's Witch, rider, closest companion, and emotional centre. Their bond sustains both ordinary school life and recovery from Null Stone wounds. (Chapters 27–38, 49–83, 91–156, and 210–317)
  • Wolfe Noxus: Pup trusts Wolfe as a comfortable source of mana and as someone able to understand his nonverbal intentions; Wolfe also helps save him after the battlefield shooting. (Chapters 38, 71–75, 92, and 155–156)
  • Ember: Ember adopts Pup as a canine friend and energetic playmate. Pup rarely matches the Hell Hound's enthusiasm but continues sharing Forest Grove's common spaces and later celebrations with him. (Chapters 208, 215–216, 239, 286–287, 300, 485, and 1053)
  • Flame: Pup and Flame are early Academy companions who ride, sleep, guard, and absorb mana together, though the lizard's intelligence and Fire abilities remain separate from Pup's traits. (Chapters 31–83 and 101–136)

Items

Pup is a sentient Familiar, not an item. He owns no uniquely traced artifact in the final manifest; treats, riding arrangements, and temporary travel spells are ordinary provisions rather than personal relics. (Chapters 31, 74, 100, and 212–215)
