Katerina Mills
Katerina Mills is a young, cat-eared Witch from the Wastes whose Bloodline Curse is removed before it can harden into permanent damage. She becomes a Forest Grove student and healer-in-training. She is distinct from her tiny Familiar, Faerie Katerina, who adopts the same given name.
Biography
Curse cleansing and early awakening
Katerina is brought to Wolfe while still below the normal age of awakening, with a mutation that has left her curse material liquid rather than integrated into her body. Wolfe's treatment pushes it out before it can cause the lasting damage seen in older Witches; the bond formed during the process awakens her aura early. Excited by survival and by the chance to become a Witch like her healer mother, she gives her name as “Katerina Mills” and accepts life in the Den as both a rescued child and a new student. (Chapters 202–204)
Her earlier work as a village scout gives her more wilderness sense than her age suggests. She can disappear beneath a bush, understands the hazards of the Wastes, and adapts quickly to Den routines, yet her awakening leaves her with an educational burden several years ahead of schedule. The result is not instant mastery: even as her aura grows unusually fast through the bond, she remains a novice who must learn ordinary spell safety, theory, and social expectations. (Chapters 206, 210, 225, 235, and 239)
Familiar and Forest Grove student
Katerina nervously performs her Familiar summoning and calls a tiny, butterfly-winged Faerie from a nearly white cloud. Because the Faerie speaks too quickly for others, Katerina often translates and makes room for her in a hanging net, beginning a partnership that joins her village-bred curiosity to Fae knowledge. Her later school uniform and presentation as Forest Grove's first-year curse-cleansing success turn her private rescue into evidence that the settlement can educate young Witches safely. (Chapters 207–209, 242, 280, and 302)
At school she completes defensive magic, harmless Witch spells, and beneficial potions while showing unusually strong potential. Her stated ambition is practical rather than prestigious: she wants to return to her village and replace her mother as its healer. The corpus preserves an identity inconsistency—Katerina states “Katerina Mills” at rescue, while Wolfe later believes she never had a family name—so this article retains the direct introduction without inventing an explanation for the contradiction. (Chapters 203, 303, 433, 446, and 448)
Advanced training
Katerina volunteers first for an experimental aura-and-vein enhancement, accepting discomfort to prove the process for other students. She is left wobbly afterward, showing that willingness and compatibility do not remove the procedure's strain. By the festival she is explicitly a Rank Two Witch and is studying advanced Fae healing, a development consistent with her long-standing goal but not evidence for a precisely dated or individually depicted Rank Two breakthrough. (Chapters 483–484 and 697–698)
Appearance and personality
Katerina is young and small enough to be treated as an underage student, with conspicuous fluffy black, catlike ears retained after her curse is cleansed. She first appears in the practical context of Wastes scouting and later wears a Forest Grove school uniform. She is enthusiastic, affectionate, and sometimes naïve, but also brave enough to scout dangerous ground and volunteer first for painful magical research. Eye colour, exact height, and other physical details are not established. (Chapters 203, 206, 210, 280, 302, 446, and 483–484)
Magic, skills, and limitations
Witchcraft and healing
Katerina demonstrates restraining vines, dark mist, and Horrific Visage, including an illusion of glowing red eyes. Her schoolwork covers defensive spells, non-harmful Witch Magic, and beneficial potions; later she advances into Fae healing. The vines are not inherently black magic unless used harmfully. Her early awakening accelerates opportunity, not experience, and the enhancement treatment visibly leaves her unsteady. (Chapters 296, 303, 483–484, and 698)
Scouting and Familiar work
Her village training makes her an effective young Wastes scout with concealment and survival habits. Through Faerie Katerina, she can translate the Familiar's rapid speech and study Fae Forest spell history, but the Faerie's forest-shaping powers remain the Familiar's own rather than proof of Katerina's personal spell list. (Chapters 206–210, 242, 423, and 448)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Awakened Aura / Rank One — bloodline curse cleansed; aura awakened early | 202–204 | Her underage curse is still liquid and is removed before permanent integration. |
| Rank Two Witch | 697–698 | Her rank is explicit by the festival and healing class; the exact breakthrough is not shown and may be part of a mass event. |
Relationships
- Wolfe Noxus: Wolfe removes Katerina's liquid curse, becomes the focus of her early bond, and provides the magical conditions for her premature awakening and education. (Chapters 202–204, 225, and 235)
- Faerie Katerina: Katerina's Familiar shares her name, relies on her as translator in early scenes, and becomes her partner in Fae studies. The two identities are not interchangeable. (Chapters 207–209, 242, and 448)
- Ella Noxus: Ella helps heal and stabilize Katerina during the cleansing, giving the newly awakened Witch immediate support within the Den. (Chapters 203–204)
- Mary Morris: Mary participates in Katerina's education and library life; Katerina's instinct to hide from her also reflects the pressure of an ambitious study schedule. (Chapter 433)
- Kira: Katerina greets Kira with open affection, including hugging her tails, a small sign of how readily she embraces Forest Grove's mixed-species community. (Chapter 432)
Items
No uniquely traced artifact in the final notable-item manifest is assigned to Katerina. Her school uniform, scout gear, potion materials, and classroom tools are ordinary equipment rather than individually named artifacts. (Chapters 206, 280, 303, and 698)
