Summoner’s Die: Form

Summoner’s Die: Form is a twelve-sided growth item that changes the form of creatures as they are summoned. Jason wins it in the fourth Reaper trial but cannot activate it because he has no summoning power, so Humphrey becomes its practical wielder. (Chapters 171, 199, 237)

History

The die appears as a clear gemstone with twelve engraved facets, each originally bearing the translated name of an animal. Its requirement immediately prevents Jason from using his own reward: only someone enacting a summoning power can trigger it. Humphrey incorporates it into training with his dragon-tooth warriors, repeatedly producing altered bodies such as gorillas, hunting cats and giant blood-draining spiders. (Chapters 171, 199)

After the die advances to bronze rank, three faces change from ordinary animal symbols to more complex results. Clive Standish helps Humphrey translate them. A “power” result causes a second roll and produces larger, stronger werewolf-like summons, while a later multi-stage result combines “double,” bird and cat into a formation of griffins. The item’s growth therefore expands its random vocabulary rather than making its outcome predictable. (Chapter 237)

Properties and use

Rolling the die during a summoning randomly alters the summoned creature’s form. At bronze rank it works with bronze-rank or lower summoning powers and can produce either a direct animal form or compound results from special faces. The transformation preserves important features of the original summon: Humphrey’s altered warriors remain dragon-bone creatures and still receive equipment generated by his storage power. (Chapters 171, 199, 237)

The die can be combined with Summoner’s Die: Element and Summoner’s Die: Power, but using more than one die of the same kind negates all copies. Randomness is its central limitation; Humphrey must decide whether an uncertain alteration is worth the risk in a critical battle. It also cannot be activated independently or by a wielder without a qualifying summoning ability. (Chapters 171, 237)
