Ritualist’s Umbrella

The Ritualist’s Umbrella is a blue umbrella whose silver diagram makes rituals and underwater movement more practical. Jason receives it after reaching the centre of the City of Fallen Echoes and quickly revises his initial disappointment once its functions are identified. (Chapter 170)

History

Jason earns the umbrella as the second Reaper-trial reward while his teammates receive more obviously martial tools. It has a pale-blue metal shaft and tines, dark-blue cloth and a silver magical diagram inside the opened canopy. His first reaction is to compare it unfavourably with the others’ equipment, but reading its effects reveals a versatile expedition tool rather than a mundane rain shield. (Chapter 170)

The umbrella’s combination of environmental protection and ritual support suits the field conditions the trials are testing. It can provide an air pocket in liquid environments and stabilise local magic where a ritualist has no prepared chamber. Jason stores it after the group attracts attention by publicly examining their rewards; its later disposition is not established. (Chapter 170)

Properties and use

When opened, the umbrella floats and follows the person who opened it. It repels liquid and extracts breathable air from surrounding liquid, enabling underwater travel without requiring the bearer to hold the canopy. It supplies no propulsion, so the user must still swim, walk or rely on another movement power. (Chapter 170)

The silver diagram harmonises nearby ambient magic enough to ease iron- and bronze-rank rituals. This is local support, not complete isolation: other magic used nearby can disrupt the harmonisation, and the stated benefit does not extend to higher-rank ritual work.
