Hiram

Hiram is the veteran caretaker of the astral aperture feeding a mountain waterfall near Greenstone. He guides the newly empowered Jason Asano on one of his first contracts and becomes his partner in an unexpectedly dangerous village defence. (Chapters 26–31)

Biography

The waterfall and the village

Hiram expects another routine shift until the waterfall stops, monsters emerge and the returning torrent blasts him and Jason off the mountain. Neither man is eager to fight, but retreat would leave shabs free to reach the village; Hiram kills one despite being battered while Jason handles the others. Years later Jason visits his lakeside home and again protects the village during a manifestation. By Jason’s later return, Hiram has reached bronze rank, restoring vigour to a body worn by a lifetime on the mountain trail. (Chapters 26–31, 201–203, 898)

Skills and relationships

Hiram combines intimate knowledge of the aperture and trail with the practical combat ability needed in an isolated settlement. His advancement never changes his local focus: he remains tied to his granddaughter, village and caretaker duties rather than pursuing a wider adventuring career. (Chapters 26, 29, 201–203, 898)
