Elspeth inherits a branch constrained by aristocratic interference and responds by enforcing rules with punishing resolve. That toughness lets her resist elites, but it also leads her to bargain around Sophie and Jason when political advantage demands it. Years later, Jason challenges her refusal to address worker unrest.
