Albert “Bert” Bertinelli is a Greenstone Adventure Society clerk whose quiet integrity protects vulnerable adventurers from institutional abuse.

Biography

Decency behind the desk

Albert handles admissions, contracts, and prisoners from an unglamorous Society desk, giving Jason Asano one of his first examples of a decent official in Greenstone. When Lucian Lamprey’s people try to remove Sophie Wexler without lawful authority, Albert refuses to process the transfer. That choice exposes a low-ranking clerk to powerful enemies but preserves the procedural barrier protecting Sophie until stronger allies can intervene. (Chapters 37, 44, 61–64, 83–107)

The Society rewards Albert’s courage with a complete set of essences and a promotion to the upper reception desk. His advancement is a consequence of doing the ordinary job correctly when corruption made that dangerous, not of battlefield fame. He remains one of the “Berts” Jason remembers as proof that Greenstone’s institutions contain people worth defending. (Chapters 192–213, 455–456)

Skills and abilities

Albert is an experienced administrative clerk who knows Society procedure, contract handling, detention rules, and the practical flow of adventurer work. He later receives essences, but no developed combat style is demonstrated; the decisive limit and strength of his role are institutional authority, which works only when he is willing to insist on it.
