Nicolas

Nicolas is a Senator of Luminera, an Executioner of the Akashic Records, and the master of Signora Everly. Once called the Paragon of Justice, he refuses to join the systematic killing of Hades's descendants and becomes an uneasy ally of Neo Hargraves in Tartarus. His defense of the Grand Expedition costs the remaining lives stored through his sword, Hestia.

Biography

A Senator who refuses escalation

Nicolas first appears when another powerful figure pressures him to act against Neo. Nicolas has already settled the immediate dispute with Henry and says there is no need for further punishment. Although he allows ranked disciples to frighten Neo, he refuses to join the larger slaughter of Hades's bloodline and dismisses the argument that another One Above All must be eliminated preemptively. His restraint is imperfect, but materially different from the proposed extermination. (Chapters 369–370)

He is later revealed as an Exalted Executioner, a Senator, and Signora Everly's master. Nicolas joins Olivia, Percival, and Neo on the Akashic mission to Tartarus, with personal responsibility for collecting its Sacred Treasure. Neo initially treats him as a likely obstacle to saving Elizabeth because older Exalted demigods resent her and Nicolas has been publicly insulted through Signora. Nicolas instead tells Olivia that he is old enough to prefer avoiding a fight. (Chapters 393–395 and 407)

The Ninth Grand Expedition

Nicolas crosses the Blood Sea with the other Executioners and qualifies for the Ninth Grand Expedition even though he is not among its absolute strongest participants. Before entry, he and Olivia protect Percival during his breakthrough. Within Tartarus, he withstands pressures that incapacitate weaker demigods and continues through the layered Nightmare World after its inhabitants and structures begin turning against the expedition. (Chapters 396–401, 407, 419, and 461)

His defining battle begins when Vlad betrays the expedition. Nicolas carries Hestia, one of seven fragments of Uranus's sword, whose speaking spirit calls itself Karma. The weapon requires exceptional positive karma and lets him reform through light, but its strength is transactional. Nicolas's aim is not to defeat the vastly stronger Vlad outright; he blocks pursuit, mixes light, holy, and spatial techniques, and repeatedly rebuilds his broken body to buy evacuation time. Karma reveals that Nicolas has accumulated positive karma equal to nine lives during his first life. After earlier bargains, he offers the remaining five lives in exchange for enough power to continue. Even the amplified assault cannot make him Vlad's equal, and only seconds pass at their speed, but Nicolas refuses Vlad's claim that everyone born to criminals is also guilty. Tyr finally takes over after thanking him for protecting the people. (Chapters 506–507)

Escape and the price of justice

Neo's intervention heals Nicolas, and Nicolas continues beside Tyr until the Nightmare World falls. He escapes Tartarus with Neo, Percival, and Kane, carrying a spear and bow recovered from Zones Five and Seven. During the voyage home, his body looks younger, yet Neo can see that his remaining life is short. Hestia's bargain has postponed death rather than canceled the lives Nicolas voluntarily surrendered. (Chapters 518–519 and 532–534)

Nicolas tells Neo that he is satisfied with the sacrifice because everyone deserves a second chance and Tartarus's people have been punished long enough. He also acknowledges the Senators' persecution of Hades's children and says The One Above All made the choice everyone else feared, though a Vow prevents him from giving the complete history. The conversation gives Neo a humane counterpoint while Neo decides whether a new Cosmos should punish evil after death. (Chapter 534)

The Eternals later remove Tartarus and its participants from history, but Nicolas still dies. Neo finds body, soul, and Seed intact while Consciousness alone is gone, and concludes that Hestia's spirit enforced the sacrifice with authority stronger than the historical alteration. Percival's Fate Vision confirms the paradox: Nicolas gave his lives in the erased Tartarus sequence, so the cost remains due. He is present again among Neo's friends only after the final reconstruction. (Chapters 536, 538–539, 567, and 833)

Appearance and personality

Nicolas appears to be in his forties, with stark white hair and a thick beard. He normally presents as a stern, stoic Senator whose age and experience show in his expression. After sacrificing his remaining lives, his body becomes visibly younger, but the change is not rejuvenation; Neo can still perceive that he has little time left. His combat in Tartarus leaves his clothes torn and body repeatedly destroyed before Hestia reconstructs it. (Chapters 369, 393, 506–507, and 534)

He is terse, private, and reluctant to initiate emotional conversations. Olivia is surprised when he asks about her intentions toward Neo, and even his moral conclusions are offered without performance. Beneath that reserve, Nicolas values restraint and the possibility of reform. He refuses collective guilt based on bloodline or parentage, spends his future lives protecting prisoners he does not know, and accepts that justice without a second chance becomes another form of cruelty. (Chapters 370, 407, 507, and 534)

Powers and limitations

Exalted demigod

Nicolas is explicitly an Exalted demigod and an Executioner. He can withstand a True Name pressure that injures weaker companions and exceeds the old Stage-1 Earth's ordinary Paragon gene limit. Later narration calls him Stage 2 (Exalted), using the God-path comparison to describe his level. The text does not depict a separate personal transformation into a numbered God Stage, so Exalted remains the clearest attained rank. (Chapters 393, 419, and 533)

Light, holy, and spatial combat

Against Vlad, Nicolas combines light, holy, and spatial energy. He fires radiant spears and arrows, layers slashes with space distortion, redirects himself through warped space, and reforms a destroyed body out of light. These techniques make him extraordinarily persistent but do not close the fundamental gap: Vlad remains a Stage 3 Grade 1 God and repeatedly overwhelms him. Nicolas succeeds at delay and protection, not at winning the duel. (Chapters 506–507)

Hestia and Karma

Hestia is a fragment of Uranus's sword and can be used only by someone with extremely positive karma. Its resident voice, Karma, converts the lives that karma would have earned into immediate strength and healing. Nicolas has accumulated the equivalent of nine lives and ultimately sells his last five. The amplification briefly wounds Vlad and repeatedly restores Nicolas, but the spirit later consumes his Consciousness even after history changes. (Chapters 506–507 and 536–539)

Neo Hargraves

Nicolas begins willing to scare Neo but refuses demands to eliminate him for Hades's blood. In Tartarus they become allies, and Nicolas's final explanation of punishment and second chances helps Neo think about justice in his own Cosmos. Neo heals him, remembers the erased expedition, investigates his paradoxical death, and later meets him again in the reconstructed history. (Chapters 369–370, 393–395, 518–519, 534–539, and 833)

Olivia von Villiers

Olivia is Nicolas's fellow Exalted Executioner and expedition companion. They guard Percival together, navigate Tartarus, and confront the danger surrounding Neo and Elizabeth. Nicolas checks whether Olivia intends to attack Neo and is relieved when she refuses. After Vlad kills her, Nicolas continues protecting expedition survivors and later carries the knowledge of her erased existence until his own death. (Chapters 393–407, 419, 461, and 506–536)

Tyr and Vlad

Vlad dismisses Nicolas as too weak, while Nicolas deliberately spends everything to prevent him from reaching more victims. Tyr arrives only after that stand has run its course and thanks Nicolas for protecting his people. The encounter defines Nicolas's justice through action: he cannot defeat a God, but he rejects inherited guilt and gives up future lives so that condemned strangers have time to escape. Items

Nicolas's defining possession is Hestia, the Sword of Justice and one of seven fragments of Uranus's sword. Its voice identifies itself as Karma, and its life-for-power bargain eventually kills him. He also recovers a spear and bow from Tartarus's fifth and seventh Zones for the Executioners' mission, but these are mission objectives held in storage rather than his personal signature weapons.
