Clara Winterfeld

Clara Winterfeld is a Mermaid demigod, Amelia de Beaufort's bodyguard, and the secret leader who curses Queen Elizabeth during the Mermaid Country rebellion. Elizabeth has publicly raised Clara and Paul as rescued orphans, but later reveals that they are her biological children from an arranged marriage. Clara's betrayal therefore converts a political revolt into the Queen's earliest family tragedy. She protects Amelia and loves Paul, yet decides that overthrowing the mother who raised her is worth assassination until Neo forces the curse back into the open. (Chapters 7–13 and 17–21)

This Clara is distinct from Clara Brown, Sean Brown's twin in much later arcs. The two have different surnames, families, abilities, and timelines. (Chapters 7–21 and 102 onward)

Biography

Amelia's bodyguard and the suspicious guest

Clara enters as Amelia's bodyguard and one of the Mermaid Country's strongest demigods. She takes the lead against an apparent intruder at the Divine Water pond, willing to confront Neo's overwhelming Death presence so Amelia can escape. Unlike the princess, she quickly notices that Neo's Divine Energy control and physical endurance do not match the apex demigod they imagined. Her hand moves toward her spear, but his sensitivity to bloodlust makes her postpone an attack until she can understand whether he is weak, deceptive, or both. (Chapters 7–9)

She escorts Neo to the palace, drives the carriage while he recovers, and follows Amelia like a silent shadow. Inside Elizabeth's audience chamber, Clara maintains the role of disciplined guard and treats Neo's immortality claim more seriously than Amelia does. Her private thoughts also establish distance from the Queen's theatrical violence: as Elizabeth and Neo negotiate torture, survival, and political compensation over tea, Clara considers herself the only sane person in the room. The apparent loyalist even accepts Elizabeth's order to guard Neo while the palace is purged. (Chapters 9–12)

Curse caster and leader of the revolt

Once alone, Clara locks the guest room, stabs Neo through the neck, and activates the curse that rots him. She waits to test whether he truly revives, then summons Paul from a shadow and explains the concealed conflict. Clara is not merely another conspirator: she leads the revolt and is the caster who has applied the Queen's fatal curse over time. She intends to hide until Elizabeth dies, use Neo's corpse to stop the purge, and blame his death on the Queen so the rebels retain moral legitimacy. (Chapter 12)

The betrayal is not presented as emotional emptiness. Paul persuaded Clara to cast the curse, and he believes she would stop him from impulsively killing Elizabeth with his own hands. Clara's loyalty to her brother is the point Neo exploits after resurrecting. When his Necrotic Touch begins consuming Paul's lifespan, she attacks with liquid-metal weapons and cripples Neo's leg but avoids killing him before her brother is safe. Faced with a choice between the rebellion and Paul, she accepts Neo's demand to transfer Elizabeth's curse even though doing so will destroy the movement she commands. (Chapters 17–18)

The failed transfer and a mother's refusal

Clara repeatedly attempts the ritual, but Elizabeth refuses to release the curse because betrayal by the children she raised has extinguished her will to live. Neo finally pushes Clara to ask her mother to survive with genuine feeling. The word “Mom,” combined with Paul's own plea, reaches Elizabeth inside the dreamscape and permits the transfer. This rescue is coerced through Neo's deceptive Death Mark threat, yet Clara's emotional appeal is not entirely fabricated: her loyalty has been divided between a revolution she believes necessary, her brother's life, and a maternal bond she has tried to sever through politics. After the transfer, Clara immediately considers killing the newly vulnerable Queen. Elizabeth overwhelms both siblings, forces the whole account from Paul, and banishes them rather than kill them. The punishment reveals the family truth: Clara and Paul are Elizabeth's biological children, not simply orphans, and the Queen still cannot bring herself to execute them after attempted regicide. Clara's later absence leaves that break unresolved. The earlier novel outline said Elizabeth would surrender her own resurrection so Clara could live after the kingdom's destruction, showing how deeply the daughter remained embedded in her hopes despite the betrayal. Appearance and personality

Clara is a powerful Mermaid woman who carries a spear and can manifest silver armor and liquid-metal weapons. Her Mermaid bloodline lets her live and speak naturally underwater. The text emphasizes military bearing more than detailed features: she leads approaches, drives and guards without complaint, and stands behind the royal family with controlled attention. That discipline breaks into visible fear around Neo's Death aura and into fury when Paul is harmed, showing the emotional pressure beneath her restrained presentation. (Chapters 7–9, 17, and 21)

She is vigilant, pragmatic, secretive, and fiercely protective of Paul. Clara reads discrepancies in Neo's performance before anyone else and builds a politically sophisticated cover story around his murder. She also hesitates at decisive moments. She does not let Paul kill Elizabeth impulsively, cannot abandon her brother to the Death Mark, and ultimately calls Elizabeth “Mom” during the transfer ritual. Those limits do not excuse the curse, but they explain why her rebellion, family loyalty, and guilt cannot be reduced to a simple appetite for power. (Chapters 9, 12–13, and 17–21)

Mermaid bloodline and combat

Clara's Mermaid bloodline lets her breathe and communicate underwater, and her reputation places her among the country's strongest demigods. She fights with a spear, manifests silver armor, and converts hovering liquid-metal orbs into weapons. Elizabeth can nevertheless overpower her completely once the Queen is free of the curse, while Neo's Death aura and resurrection disrupt Clara's tactical confidence despite his much lower ordinary rank. The novel never names Clara's exact Awakened-to-Apotheon tier or Grade. (Chapters 7–9, 17, and 21)

Curses and revolt infrastructure

Clara casts the long-term curse capable of rendering an Exalted Demigod helpless and can transfer it when the target consents. The curse cannot simply be canceled after activation, even by its caster, which is why Elizabeth's refusal to let it go nearly defeats the ritual. Clara also calls Paul from the room's shadows, but Paul is the one explicitly shown shapeshifting into her appearance; the narrative does not establish independent shadow transformation as Clara's own ability. Their separation ends the early arc without reconciliation and becomes part of Elizabeth's lasting conviction that her own children wanted her dead. (Chapters 12–13 and 18–21)

Paul

Paul is Clara's younger brother, co-conspirator, and emotional priority. He persuades her to curse Elizabeth, but Clara prevents him from acting recklessly and sacrifices the rebellion when Neo makes Paul's survival conditional on saving the Queen. Their bond is genuine and also the vulnerability through which their plan collapses. (Chapters 12 and 17–21)

Amelia de Beaufort

Clara serves as Amelia's bodyguard, protects her at the Divine Water pond, and helps raise her within the royal household. Amelia calls Clara her sister and initially cannot believe that either Clara or Paul would harm Elizabeth. Neo Hargraves

Clara correctly identifies gaps in Neo's apparent strength but underestimates the disruptive value of his immortality and Death spell. She kills him once, tries to control his body and public story, and is then coerced by his threat against Paul. Their contest is one of leverage rather than equal rank: Clara dominates physically, while Neo controls the information and risk that matter to her. (Chapters 7–13 and 17–20)
