Kai's Cloaking Amulet

Kai's cloaking amulet is a pendant enchanted by Virya to falsify the race grade perceived by magical inspection. Its value lies less in physical protection than in keeping Kai's abnormal advancement from turning an investigation into scrutiny of his profession, spatial ring, and other secrets.

History

Concealing Kai's advancement

Virya enchants the pendant before leaving the archipelago, and Kai Tylenn wears it hidden beneath his shirt. It first appears when Captain Zerith asks about Kai's advancement: the pendant masks his grade, can warn him about attempted scanning, and is explicitly not infallible against powerful inspection. During the investigation following the Sylspring raid, Kai depends on it to support an unremarkable public identity: an observer should perceive an Orange race grade and see the object itself as polished iron. Removal would expose the difference between the disguise and his actual state. (Chapters 94 and 143)

Edgar's examination

Edgar notices that Kai is disguising his grade but initially cannot identify which artifact powers the effect. After a wager, Kai reveals the metal amulet and agrees to lend it to Edgar for two months in exchange for enchanted sea-serpent fangs and a temporary substitute that conceals both grade and profession. Edgar takes the amulet into his spatial robe to study it. The supplied chapters do not explicitly show him returning it, so later custody should not be inferred from the loan's intended duration. Abilities and properties

• The enchantment makes magical inspection report Kai's race as Orange rather than revealing his true advancement. (Chapters 94 and 143)
• It disguises the pendant as an ordinary piece of polished iron to an observer, helping the concealment appear mundane. (Chapter 143)
• The effect can warn Kai when someone attempts to scan him, but Virya cautions that powerful scanning skills may penetrate it. (Chapter 94)
• The effect depends on Kai continuing to wear the amulet. If an investigator removes it, the suppressed truth becomes immediately apparent; the corpus does not state that it can alter his profession or conceal every other artifact he carries. Edgar therefore supplies a separate bracelet while he studies it. (Chapters 143 and 174)
