Communication Cubes

The communication cubes are metallic artifacts acquired by Flynn Rilei to let the Higharbor household speak with Kai's family across the archipelago. They turn periodic family contact into a practical routine, although limited charges and cooldown prevent unrestricted use.

History

A link between Higharbor and Sylspring

Flynn buys the cubes before Kai's return from Sylspring and immediately uses the favor of acquiring them as leverage in their domestic teasing. Their more important purpose appears the next morning, when Kai Tylenn contacts Alana Tylenn and Moui Tylenn to discuss buying elixirs for the unborn Kien. Alana's voice comes directly from the metal cube, allowing a decision that would otherwise require travel or slow correspondence. (Chapters 187–188)

Limited charges after Kai's return

When Kai returns from the Hidden Sanctuary, Flynn cannot use the cube immediately because it is cooling down after he spends extra charges organizing Kien's second birthday. He instead arranges passage to Sylspring in person. A later miniature cube in Lou's possession establishes that communication artifacts exist in more than one size, but the corpus does not prove it belongs to the same paired set Flynn bought. Abilities and properties

• A cube carries a speaker's voice over long distance to its counterpart, permitting real-time family conversation between islands. (Chapter 188)
