Soluli

Soluli, commonly addressed as Elder Soluli, is Greenside's elected mayor and the leader of its coming-of-age observance for Yatei. His Orange race and type-three profession make him unusually advanced for an islander, while his favoritism toward old-town families deepens the settlement's social divide.

Getting Back Up

After the previous mayor is removed for abandoning his post during Greenside's crisis, Soluli wins the replacement election as the candidate from the old part of town. Migrants outnumber the old-town population but divide their support among competing interests, allowing his more cohesive constituency to prevail. His election returns local government quickly after the Republic's temporary administration, yet it does not erase the boundary between old and new Greenside; later conduct shows that Soluli represents that division as much as he governs across it. The Ceremony to The Price of Our Choices

Soluli leads Greenside's seven-year-olds barefoot into the Veeryd jungle to thank Yatei and request guidance. He explains the settlement's founding story, bows before the great tree, pricks each child's finger so blood touches its trunk, and orders them to escape the surrounding root maze as a test. When Kai collapses after receiving a spiritual notification, Soluli notices something unusual and quietly asks whether he checked his notifications. Kai conceals the event, leaving Soluli suspicious but without confirmation. (Chapters 51–53)

The mayor praises children who finish quickly but treats slower or frightened participants with contempt. He tells an injured, crying girl that giving up has shamed her family and proves the spirits do not favor her, reinforcing hierarchy rather than offering comfort. Kai's later assessment is that Soluli would not protect an impoverished new-town victim or meaningfully investigate his father's murder. The latter is Kai's inference rather than a direct refusal shown on page, but it accords with the bias Soluli displays during the ceremony. (Chapters 54 and 58)

Appearance and personality

Soluli is an old man with a hunched back and a voice unexpectedly powerful for his age. His posture can straighten into a solemn ceremonial bearing, and his hard looks are enough to silence children. No hair, eye, clothing, weapon scars, or exact age is described. (Chapters 51–54)

He is authoritative, ceremonious, proud of Greenside's old-town lineage, and attentive to signs of spiritual favor. He can organize a large group and communicate tradition clearly, but his standards are harsh and partisan. He positions old-town children at the front, speaks of their ancestry fondly, and humiliates those who fail his test. His possible awareness of Kai's inspection also makes him perceptive, though the mechanism is never explained. (Chapters 51–54)
