Ferla

Ferla is Valela Hightide's personal bodyguard, a Yellow-grade fighter who specializes in concealed observation and spear combat. Her suspicion of strangers and pragmatic risk assessment make her a persistent layer of security around Valela during the Vastaire expedition. (Chapters 187–227)

Biography

Stalker to Preparations

Ferla first reveals herself after Kai Tylenn approaches Valela at night. She physically restrains him, warns that he is more dangerous than he appears, and disappears into the shadows only after Valela identifies him as an acquaintance. That encounter establishes her governing priority: she does not rely on Higharbor's patrols or Valela's confidence when an unknown person gets close. She continues observing later private negotiations from concealment, keeping her presence uncertain even when Kai expects her nearby. (Chapters 187–188)

During the Vastaire excavation, Ferla bars Kai from the delegation's tent and blames herself for not accompanying Valela during an earlier disaster. When spatial disturbances release awakened beasts, she accepts Kai's warning on Valela's order, cloaks herself in Shadow, and drives her spear through a yellow boar's skull. The beast remains active long enough to force her to abandon the weapon, after which she immediately pulls Valela away. Ferla then argues against returning to the larger battle: without her spear and with the group's mana and confidence depleted, she judges that protecting the council's representative and reporting the incident matter more than helping the military at unacceptable risk. (Chapters 204–211)

Ferla returns beside Valela for the renewed expedition and remains wary whenever Kai approaches, including after he escapes Republic custody and enters Valela's quarters. She lowers her spear only after Valela rejects the possibility that he is a military plant, then challenges his account of a hidden realm rather than accepting dramatic intelligence without scrutiny. Her caution never develops into trust within the supplied chapters, but it does not override Valela's decisions; Ferla consistently voices the danger, obeys the final judgment, and preserves her role as adviser as well as physical protection. (Chapters 215–227)

Appearance and personality

Ferla is a middle-aged woman with a plain face, severe eyes, a stony expression, and a tough build that Kai compares to a gnarled spike. The corpus does not give her hair color, height, or clothing in useful detail. She is brusque, vigilant, intimidating, practical, and intensely protective of Valela. Her suspicion can look hostile, particularly toward Kai, but she is not reckless: she recognizes depleted resources, accepts a retreat when the military can contain a threat, and does not let guilt over missing an earlier expedition force her into another avoidable loss. (Chapters 187 and 204–211)

Skills, magic, and the Guide

Yellow grade and spear combat

Ferla is explicitly one of three Yellow-grade members in Valela's retreating party. She wields a spear with enough force and accuracy to penetrate an awakened boar's skull after Valela's spatial attack wounds it. The beast's continued thrashing forces her to release the embedded weapon, demonstrating that a lethal strike does not guarantee immediate control of a durable awakened target. The source does not name Ferla's race stage, profession, profession grade, attributes, spear skills, enhancement effects, or the source of the mana glow around her weapon. (Chapters 210–211)

Shadow concealment and Danger Sense

Ferla can hide her presence in Shadow mana, monitor a meeting without becoming visible, and dash from concealment during combat. Kai detects only a swirl of Shadow and a camouflaged presence when she leaves their first encounter, so the technique's range, duration, cost, and response to bright light remain unknown. She also possesses Danger Sense, but says it cannot predict where spatial tears will open until they appear, whereas Kai's Yellow skill enhanced by Favor warns him earlier. That comparison establishes both the existence and a concrete limit of Ferla's skill without identifying its grade or specialization. (Chapters 187–188 and 210–211)

Protective judgment

Ferla maintains concealed watch, challenges unannounced approaches, controls access with her spear, extracts Valela from immediate danger, and advises her when a mission exceeds the group's remaining capacity. These actions demonstrate bodyguard training and situational judgment, but the corpus names no perception, guarding, command, or social skill beyond Danger Sense. She cannot anticipate every novel hazard, loses her primary weapon during the boar encounter, and depends on Valela's authority for the final decision even when she disagrees. (Chapters 187–225)

Relationships

  • Valela Hightide: Ferla is Valela's bodyguard and addresses her as “miss.” She watches meetings from concealment, interposes herself against perceived threats, pulls Valela away from an awakened beast, and offers blunt tactical advice, while ultimately following Valela's choices about whom to admit or trust. (Chapters 187–188 and 204–225)
  • Kai Tylenn: Ferla identifies Kai as more dangerous than he appears and never fully relaxes around him. They cooperate during the ruins escape, where she accepts his warning and later compares Danger Sense limitations with him, but she still suspects manipulation when he enters Valela's quarters after breaking custody. (Chapters 187–188, 204–211, and 225)
  • Lou Denule: Ferla and Lou serve within Valela's protective circle during the expedition. Lou can order her to admit Kai when Valela expects him, and both remain ready to defend Valela when Kai later appears unexpectedly in her room. (Chapters 204 and 225)

Items

  • Spear: Ferla carries a spear as her primary weapon and uses it both to control access and fight awakened beasts. She leaves one spear embedded in a yellow boar's skull during the escape; the source does not state whether the weapon is recovered, enchanted, or replaced before the next expedition. (Chapters 204–215 and 225)
