Annyl
Annyl is a Merian Republic truthteller who conducts inquiries through apparently casual conversation. Although she can lie, her training and soul-bound obligations constrain whom she may investigate and what political initiative she may take. She first encounters Flynn Rilei in Sylspring, then questions Kai Tylenn at Wildepoint under orders whose legitimacy becomes central to her response.
Biography
Linked Fates
Annyl arrives in Sylspring carrying two bags and presents herself as a newcomer who cannot find her destination. She enlists Flynn as a guide, then gently turns their conversation toward his departure, the pirate attack, and rumors about the Voices. Flynn suspects that her harmless appearance conceals the truthteller sent to investigate the raid, but the chapter never confirms whether meeting him was arranged or coincidental. Her effortless handling of the bags and controlled questions nevertheless show that the lost-traveler presentation is not a reliable measure of her capabilities or purpose. (Chapter 145)
Preparations to The King of Veeyrd
At Wildepoint, Annyl approaches Kai in the mess hall, claims to be new, and asks to share his table because she dislikes eating alone. His Hallowed Intuition reacts, and his blunt refusal prevents the intended conversation. She later uses a logistics-paperwork pretext to question him about his origins, teachers, contracts, Vastaire knowledge, and dangerous Yellow-grade skill. Rather than forcing a formal interrogation, she relies on social pressure and plausible administrative curiosity, leaving Kai wary without giving him proof of her actual office. (Chapters 213–214)
Annyl's private meeting with Seryne establishes that Seryne recruited her using false authorization. Annyl reports that Kai is honestly pursuing his stated efforts but refuses to certify Seryne's broader claim that the expedition contains traitors: one person merely suspects foreign contact, while the others believe their orders lawful. Because her soul-binding prohibits political meddling and unauthorized personal initiative, she withholds conclusions that the unlawful request does not entitle Seryne to receive and asks for legitimate authority before probing Kai more deeply. Makyn's failure to recognize her name or rank leaves open whether “Annyl” itself is an alias. The information she does provide increases official interest in Kai's Fate-related ability, but the corpus does not show her joining the subsequent expedition. (Chapters 214–217)
Appearance and personality
Annyl is a young woman not yet twenty, with auburn hair cut in a pixie style, large hazel eyes, and a smile that produces a cheek dimple. Her slight, approachable presentation leads Flynn to doubt that she could be a professional questioner, yet she lifts two travel bags without apparent effort. No uniform, insignia, race grade, or lasting injury is described. (Chapters 145 and 213–214)
She is patient, observant, and practiced at turning ordinary sociability into an investigative tool. Her pleasant manner can be constructed, but her exchange with Seryne shows an independent concern for precise truth and lawful scope rather than blind obedience to the person giving an order. She can also be cautious and professionally self-protective: instead of openly accusing Seryne, she distinguishes knowledge from belief, answers only what the authorization permits, and requests formal backing for further action. (Chapters 214–217)
Skills, magic, and the Guide
- Truthtelling: Annyl can assess statements and the beliefs behind them, but this is not simple omniscience. A technically true phrase, incomplete disclosure, or honest misconception can all frustrate a verdict. She explains that truthtellers can themselves lie and that truth depends on what a speaker believes or does not know. The corpus does not name her profession, grade, skill level, range, or error rate. (Chapter 214)
- Social Acumen and Emotional Insight: These named skills help Annyl read Seryne's reactions and manage the emotional direction of an interview. They support her use of friendly approaches, feigned uncertainty, and administrative pretexts, but they do not compel cooperation: Kai's refusal derails her first attempt, and his half-truths remain difficult to classify. Their levels and Guide grades are unstated. (Chapters 213–214)
- Training and soul-binding: Truthteller instruction covers lies expressed through paper as well as speech and teaches attention to intention, belief, and omission. Annyl is soul-bound to avoid political interference and personal initiative outside her mandate, and she regards her loyalty as owed to the Republic rather than to Seryne. The binding's exact wording, enforcement mechanism, and penalty are not disclosed. (Chapter 214)
- Physical ability: She carries two bags without visible strain, but no scene establishes a strength skill, race stage, weapon proficiency, or combat ability. This isolated feat is insufficient to infer a formal progression milestone. (Chapter 145)
No public power-progression table is supplied because the corpus gives no dated grade, skill-level, or profession advancement for Annyl.
Relationships
- Seryne: Seryne covertly recruits Annyl and presses her to validate suspicions about the expedition. Annyl recognizes the authorization as false, limits her disclosure, and insists on formal authority before conducting a deeper interrogation. (Chapter 214)
- Kai Tylenn: Annyl treats Kai as an investigative subject. His intuition and habit of speaking in half-truths obstruct her informal approach, yet her qualified report about him contributes to official interest in his Fate ability. (Chapters 213–217)
- Flynn Rilei: Flynn guides Annyl through Sylspring while suspecting she is the expected truthteller. She uses the walk to ask about his departure and recent local events, but neither reveals full knowledge of the other. (Chapter 145)
- Merian Republic: Annyl states that her professional loyalty belongs to the Republic and its headquarters, not to an individual officer. Her soul-binding and demand for legitimate authorization make that institutional allegiance an operational limit as well as a duty. (Chapter 214)
Items
- Travel bags: Annyl carries two bags on arrival in Sylspring and lifts them without difficulty. Their contents and any enchantments are not shown. (Chapter 145)
- Notebook and pen: She uses ordinary-looking paperwork and note-taking as part of her logistics cover while questioning Kai. The corpus does not identify either object as magical. (Chapter 214)
