Holy Sword Altair

The Holy Sword Altair is the sacred blade around which the Church of Light's concept of the Hero developed. It served first as Vermouth Lionheart's emblem and later as a genuine conduit between the Light and Eugene Lionheart. (Chapters 183, 380, and 540)

History

The sword of the Hero

Church tradition described Altair as the first child of the God of Light, made from the flesh and blood of an incarnation that descended to illuminate the ancient Darkness. The sword remained in Yuras until Vermouth drew it and carried it into the war against the Demon Kings. A later revelation qualified the legend: Altair was created as a medium through which the reincarnated Agaroth could draw upon the divine power accumulated by the world's faith, and Vermouth had forcibly drawn the blade without ever receiving its full recognition. After Vermouth disappeared, Altair was kept in the Lionheart treasury even though it had originally belonged to the Holy Empire. Lionheart patriarchs could physically draw it, but they could not make it shine as it had for Vermouth. Eugene himself failed to move it at thirteen. Six years later, after meeting the Saints and receiving the Light's recognition, he drew the sword effortlessly and became its next acknowledged wielder. (Chapters 18, 87, 89–90, and 504)

Eugene's campaigns

Altair became both Eugene's weapon and proof of his position as Hero. In Yuras, its light led him to the hidden Fount of Light, destroyed Sergio, and helped expose the machinery surrounding Anise and Kristina. Against armies and Demon Kings, Eugene combined its divine power with his own techniques: its light purified corpses corrupted by dark power, strengthened a holy barrier alongside the Saints, and cut through or erased demonic power. (Chapters 195, 201, 363, and 369)

During the battle with the specter, Altair's blade shattered. This did not extinguish its sanctity; breaking the physical shell released the Light contained within it around Eugene. The sword subsequently appeared intact again, but its blade could waver into pure light rather than remain ordinary metal. This change revealed the weapon's physical form to have been a vessel for its sacred power rather than the source of that power. (Chapter 504)

Reforging as Levantein

Eugene later shattered Altair together with the Moonlight Sword, Demon Spear, and Annihilation Hammer. Their remnants and powers were melted in the Light and reforged into Levantein, a transparent blade that carried Altair's radiance alongside the other weapons' properties. Altair therefore no longer existed as a separate sword by the end of its recorded history, but its sacred light continued as a constituent of Levantein. (Chapters 532–535)

Abilities and properties

• Altair acts as a conduit for divine power gathered through faith. Its brilliant light answers an acknowledged Hero, while ordinary claimants—and even Lionheart patriarchs—cannot reproduce that response. (Chapters 87, 183, 540, and 541)
• Its light is particularly effective against demonic corruption and dark power. It can purify corrupted dead, reinforce holy protections with the Saints' support, and empower Eugene's sword techniques. (Chapters 363 and 369)
• The blade can provide guidance and revelation rather than merely destructive force: it led Eugene toward the Fount of Light and transmitted Anise's memories through a dream. (Chapters 195 and 504)
• Vermouth could wield Altair only by sealing its true Light and forcing the blade from its resting place. The faint radiance he produced was leakage through that seal, not proof that the sword had accepted him. (Chapter 541)
• Its original physical blade was destructible. When it broke, however, the released Light restored the sword in a purer form; Eugene later sacrificed that separate form permanently when forging Levantein. (Chapters 504 and 532)
