Devouring Sword Azphel

The Devouring Sword Azphel is a jagged, mana-consuming sword once wielded by Vermouth Lionheart. Its ability to cut spells and absorb their mana made it one of Eugene Lionheart's principal answers to hostile magic. (Chapters 18, 89, and 125)

History

From Vermouth to the treasury

Azphel was one of the extraordinary weapons that Vermouth collected during the hero party's journey. He used his own knowledge as a wizard to identify a spell's weak point and sever even mega-class magic with the sword. After his disappearance, the weapon was stored in the Lionheart treasury, where its sawlike edge and beast-fang protrusions distinguished it from an ordinary blade. (Chapters 18 and 89)

Eugene initially passed over Azphel because he had not yet learned enough magic to exploit it properly. After obtaining the broken Moonlight Sword, he recognized that the two weapons' drawbacks could compensate for one another: Azphel's absorbed mana could offset the Moonlight Sword's consumption, while the Moonlight Sword could provide destructive force beyond Azphel's own. When the Lionheart council later opened the treasury to him, he took Azphel with Altair, Pernoa, and Kharbos. (Chapters 68–70 and 87–89)

Spell-breaking service

Eugene first demonstrated Azphel's practical value by absorbing a burst of mana and using the blade to divert attacks that had shattered an ordinary sword. In his duel with Jeneric, he cut through magically controlled roots, then waited until the wizard committed to a broad spell assault before breaking the spells and feeding their scattered mana into his own flames. The weapon was most effective in the hands of a wielder who could read a spell and choose the decisive point of interruption. (Chapters 99 and 125)

By the latest recorded physical use, Azphel had passed at least temporarily to Cyan Lionheart, who paired it with Gedon's Shield while defending the Black Lion Castle. The corpus does not state whether Eugene transferred ownership permanently or merely loaned the sword, so its exact legal ownership remains unresolved. (Chapter 452)

Abilities and properties

• Azphel can cut magic and devour the mana that forms it, rendering a successfully intercepted spell ineffective. The absorbed mana can strengthen the sword and can also feed the wielder's active power. (Chapters 18, 99, and 125)
• The sword can absorb loose or explosive mana during a clash, not only intact spell structures. It also withstands impacts that destroy conventional weapons. (Chapter 99)
• Its power depends on correct use. Vermouth exploited it fully because he could identify magical weak points, while Eugene initially judged that his own lack of magical education would prevent him from doing the same. (Chapter 18)
• Azphel is less overwhelmingly destructive than the Moonlight Sword. Eugene regarded the pairing as complementary rather than equivalent: Azphel supplied efficiency and recovered mana, while moonlight supplied superior raw power. (Chapters 68–70)
