Cloak of Darkness

The Cloak of Darkness is a high-level spatial artifact owned by Melkith El-Hayah and loaned for years to Eugene Lionheart. It combines subspace storage, defensive enchantments, appearance alteration, and the redirection of attacks through calculated spatial coordinates. (Chapters 48, 53, and 178)

History

The bargain with Melkith

Eugene first obtained the cloak by bargaining with Melkith: he lent her Wynnyd, and in return she lent him the Cloak of Darkness. Their exchange valued one day with Wynnyd as one year with the cloak, producing a multi-year loan rather than a transfer of ownership. The artifact's thick fur also made it a practical warm garment in addition to a magical tool. (Chapters 48 and 52)

Eugene quickly learned that the cloak's storage was easy to use but its signature redirection was not. Sending an attack through the cloak required him to calculate the exit coordinates and guide the spatial magic with his own mana. He used that technique against spells and physical attacks, while relying on the cloak's layered barriers against less manageable threats. (Chapters 53, 63, and 77)

An expanding portable refuge

The cloak remained with Eugene throughout his travels and could disguise itself as an ordinary coat without losing its functions. Its internal subspace stored weapons and companions, and Eugene later modified part of that space into an isolated habitat for Raimira. Altering a completed artifact was difficult, and Cyan Lionheart continued to point out that the cloak was technically borrowed from Melkith despite Eugene's long custody. (Chapters 178, 251, 263, 286, and 307)

The cloak was still in Eugene's possession and operating during the late war. No permanent transfer from Melkith or destruction of the artifact is recorded within the covered chapters. (Chapter 576)

Abilities and properties

  • Its inner space functions as capacious subspace storage. Eugene later altered a portion into a protected living environment, demonstrating that the interior could be partitioned and sustained, though modifying the finished artifact required significant effort. (Chapters 48, 178, and 286)
  • The cloak can swallow an incoming attack and discharge it from a chosen coordinate. This is not automatic: the wearer must rapidly calculate spatial coordinates and supply mana to guide the exit. (Chapters 48, 53, and 63)
  • Extremely powerful physical attacks may exceed what it can cleanly absorb. When a massive rock could not be swallowed, the cloak bulged around the impact and Eugene had to redirect it rather than simply store it. (Chapter 77)
  • Fifth Circle defensive spells cover the outer fabric, and the cloak can resist both physical and magical damage as well as mental interference. The strength of some defenses depends on the wearer's mana. (Chapters 48, 76, and 178)
  • Appearance-changing enchantments allow it to resemble an ordinary coat while preserving its storage and protective properties. (Chapters 251, 263, and 307)
