Doku

Doku is a Niqols warrior, field leader, and eventual Chief who becomes one of Khan's first genuine friends on Nitis. His disciplined command style is balanced by a talent for celebrations and mana-rich booze. More than a decade after the daylight crisis, he leads the Niqols search for Khan and Liiza, then uses the friendship he never abandoned to help turn a dangerous standoff into cooperation.

Biography

Monster hunts and the first Niqols friendship

Doku first appears leading a Niqols hunting unit during the wave of mutated monsters that precedes Nitis' daylight. He invites the isolated Khan to join because their assignments overlap, keeps classified information to himself without treating the human as inferior, and accepts Khan's unmatched speed as the basis of the group's tactics. His calm introductions, respectful bows, and willingness to fight beside another species establish the honorable leadership that shapes his later career. (Chapters 113–114)

The extended hunt shows that Doku's pragmatism is not indifference to his subordinates. He rotates the members handling the offense, gives exhausted fighters breaks, gathers multiple squads against a more dangerous target, and repeatedly uses Khan as bait only because Khan can survive the role. Doku openly praises the help afterward, and the narration identifies him as a firm leader who prioritizes his underlings. That mutual professional respect becomes the foundation of a friendship rather than a temporary battlefield convenience. (Chapters 114–115)

Academy life and the approach of daylight

At The Pure Trees academy, Doku and Azni welcome the human recruits into Niqols life. Doku gives Khan and George access to the Aduns nesting event, explains academy customs, and insists that the visitors attend a student party because social participation matters to their diplomatic mission. He also produces the mana-rich drink himself, acting as both host and cultural intermediary while making the human students look less alien to their Niqols peers. (Chapters 126, 135–137)

Doku's field duties remain more serious than his parties. He briefs Khan's group on a flower-gathering mission, leads the expedition after the ground collapses beneath the students, and conducts a thorough search through monster-filled tunnels. Two companions die, leaving him guilty about continuing the assignment, so he abandons the easy pursuit of materials and makes escape the priority. He fights the leeches with precise internal-damage palm strikes, protects the injured, and memorizes the underground routes well enough to retrieve supplies without gambling with the group's survival. Daylight crisis, survivors, and separation

When the solar wind and daylight turn the academy mission into a planetary emergency, Doku remains among the students trying to keep the joint human-Niqols group alive. He helps organize movement through the avalanche-filled valley, joins Khan and the squad leaders at the front, and looks to Khan when authority over the human recruits becomes necessary. When treacherous Niqols servants try to detain the humans, Doku condemns the betrayal and stands with the friends who had shed blood beside his species. (Chapters 187, 196–201)

The crisis leaves Doku alive but wounded, exhausted, and grieving. He and Azni are among the few academy companions to survive the valley battle, and he helps those around him even as more than three-quarters of the joint army die. During the survivors' recovery, Doku asks Khan and George whether that grief ever leaves, revealing vulnerability beneath his responsible exterior. At the final departure, he embraces both humans, promises the greatest possible reunion party, and joins Azni in assuring Khan that Liiza will not be abandoned on Nitis. (Chapters 224, 227, 230)

Chief, husband, and the Niqols standoff

During the decade of separation, Doku marries Azni and has two children, Solta and Elina. He also rises into a military Chief's position and becomes an excellent fifth-level warrior, retaining the stern discipline that had once made him argue with Azni about their places in his squad. His duty puts him in command of the Niqols forces searching for Khan and Liiza after their flight, a mission Khan fears precisely because neither man wants friendship and political orders to end in blood. (Chapters 1188, 1237, 1289, 1328)

Their face-to-face meeting resolves the conflict through trust rather than force. Doku initially maintains a Chief's serious posture, yet secretly winks when Khan asks whether they are still friends. After learning that Khan and Liiza's daughter has just been born, he immediately orders the weapons around the outpost lowered, summons Elder Savdat, reports the troops' sympathy for Khan, and arranges the shared feast that breaks the camp's division. When Yeza must later travel without her parents, Doku swears on his own children that he will deliver her safely. (Chapters 1328–1336, 1346)

Coalition representative and family reunion

After the Aynor campaign, Doku sits among Khan's returned friends and remains behind as a Niqols representative when envoys from the major powers gather. His fifth-level strength is formidable by ordinary standards but not evolved, so he accepts Khan's warning and leaves the meeting before the Thilku Emperor arrives. He continues contributing where his actual authority matters: representing the Niqols, supporting the wider alliance, and supplying a drink Liiza calls a unique talent even among her species. The coalition's enormous celebration restores the part of Doku's life that war and duty had kept apart. He drinks with George, Khan, Ilman, humans, Niqols, and Nele, but admits that seeing other couples and children makes him miss his family. Azni soon arrives with Solta and Elina and scolds him for failing to call while performing rescue duties. Doku apologizes, welcomes his children into his arms, and ends his last direct sequence playing the experienced father and affectionate husband among the interspecies community he helped make possible. Appearance and personality

Doku is a tall, slender Niqols with dark-blue skin, long white hair, and glowing white eyes. At his first appearance, a noble aura surrounds him without the entitlement Khan associates with spoiled recruits; the narration instead presents him as an honorable leader unconcerned with species differences. More than a decade later, his face has grown sharper and sterner, and he sometimes wears his white hair in thick braids, but his figure remains recognizable and free of the red mutations visible in some later Niqols. Discipline and warmth coexist in Doku. He can issue hard tactical orders, maintain classified boundaries, and obey a politically painful search mission, yet his loyalty repeatedly overrides prejudice. He is also playful, an enthusiastic drinker, an accomplished host, and openly affectionate toward Azni and their children. Loss reveals a reflective side: he asks friends how soldiers live with grief, while later fatherhood makes him a patient observer who advises George that children cannot be “won” against. Niqols martial arts and fifth-level strength

Doku's primary combat method is the Niqols art of sending mana through a target to ravage it internally. Against the giant toad, he and Liiza strike through its resistant hide and destroy its insides; underground, Doku uses precise rising palm attacks to make mutated leeches spit blood and interrupt their charges. By his reunion with Khan, he is explicitly a fifth-level warrior, strong enough to lead the Niqols expeditionary force even though evolved combatants still far surpass him. Command, tactics, and fieldcraft

Doku is repeatedly trusted with squads because he combines tactical flexibility with concern for survival. He rotates exhausted attackers, consolidates hunting teams, chooses Khan as bait on the basis of speed, maps underground passages carefully, and changes objectives when casualties make the original mission unjustifiable. As a Chief, he commands a siege force, controls its weapons, communicates with an Elder, and converts a standoff into an orderly ceasefire celebration without surrendering his species' chain of command. Aduns handling and concoction

Doku is an experienced Aduns rider whose mount can relay a destination to Snow through direct mental communication. His more distinctive noncombat talent is concoction: he can produce the Niqols' mana-rich booze from core materials, and years of practice turn it into a nourishing drink that exceeds Khan's expectations. Liiza later calls him a unique talent among the Niqols, and even the Thilku praise the result, making the skill both a cultural contribution and a practical asset in coalition gatherings. Relationships

Khan

Doku begins as Khan's field commander but becomes one of his first real Niqols friends. They hunt together, share academy parties, confide about love and grief, and support each other during the daylight crisis. A decade of separation and opposing political duties do not erase that bond: Doku's wink answers the question of their friendship, and his decision to lower the siege weapons gives Khan a peaceful route back to the Niqols. Azni

Azni is first Doku's subordinate and girlfriend, a combination that makes his sense of military propriety clash with their intense Niqols emotions. He tries to keep a professional wall between them, protects her during expeditions, and nevertheless becomes openly affectionate whenever duty relaxes. Doku eventually proposes, marries her, and becomes the father of Solta and Elina. Liiza

Doku initially participates in the academy habit of ostracizing Liiza, but his attitude changes as Khan brings her back into a circle of friends. He helps protect her during expeditions and the sunlight crisis, recognizes the reality of her relationship, and later treats her daughter as part of his own responsibility. George Ildoo

George and Doku bond through the Niqols' drinking culture and the shared losses of the daylight crisis. Doku embraces George at the human departure, promises to convey his thanks to the surviving Niqols, and later stands with him as a representative during the universal gathering. Their final scenes return them to familiar comedy, with Doku handing George drinks and offering the weary advice of a father watching another man deal with children.
