Heavy Xuan Ruler

The Heavy Xuan Ruler, also described as the Heavy Xuan Sword or a black broadsword, is the massive black meteoric-metal weapon that Yao Lao gives Xiao Yan for his training. Its weight and Dou Qi-suppressing effect first make it a deliberate burden; as Xiao Yan adapts, it becomes his characteristic weapon and the focus for several ruler techniques. History

A burden for the mountain journey

Soon after Xiao Yan leaves Wu Tan City, Yao Lao takes the unnamed ruler from his ring and orders his disciple to carry it continuously, even while sleeping. He explains that its exceptional weight and suppression of Dou Qi are meant to constrain Xiao Yan until removing that restraint produces a dramatic difference in battle. The effect is immediate: carrying it slows Xiao Yan's circulation of Dou Qi, stretches a one-day journey into two, and reduces his available fighting strength to that of a newly advanced Dou Zhe. The weapon is nearly as tall as Xiao Yan, lacks an edge or point, and bears indistinct veined patterns across its pitch-black surface. During his training in the Magic Beast Mountain Range, Xiao Yan names it the Heavy Xuan Ruler. Yao Lao incorporates it into balance and evasion exercises, requiring Xiao Yan to keep it on his back while dodging suspended logs. (Chapters 109 and 120)

Focus of the Flame Splitting Tsunami

Yao Lao temporarily takes the ruler back into his own hands to demonstrate the Flame Splitting Tsunami. Its surface patterns glow fiery red as he channels the technique through it, producing a ruler strike powerful enough to break the descending flow of a waterfall. He then returns the training burden to Xiao Yan and requires him to practice beneath that waterfall with the ruler; according to Yao Lao, the technique retains only about thirty percent of its strength without the weapon. This demonstration is an instructional use, not a reversal of the ruler's transfer to Xiao Yan. (Chapter 122)

After two years of carrying the ruler, Xiao Yan no longer struggles under its weight. He brings it openly to the Three-Year Agreement and draws it at the start of his confrontation with Nalan Yanran, marking the former training implement's transition into an established combat weapon. Signature weapon in later battles

Xiao Yan continues to summon and wield the ruler as his strength grows. Against Han Feng, he uses its broad body as a shield, drives it through close combat, and coats it in his jade-green Heavenly Flame. Later, he combines it with the Six Joint Body Flowing Ruler to protect himself and Nalan Yanran from a group attack, then channels the Flame Splitting Tsunami through it to answer the attackers. The same pair of offensive and defensive applications remains viable at much higher levels of conflict. Xiao Yan uses dense ruler images to meet Gu Yao's hand seals before launching the Flame Splitting Tsunami, and he later forms a defensive net against the First Tianzun's Bone Emperor Blade. That latter defense is breached by the blade's exceptional speed, showing that the ruler technique is formidable but not absolute; Xiao Yan nonetheless counters by smashing the Bone Emperor Blade away with the ruler itself. Abilities and properties

• The ruler is made from black meteoric metal. Yao Lao describes it as extremely heavy, very difficult to break, and likely unique on the continent. (Chapter 108)
• While carried, it suppresses the wielder's Dou Qi circulation as well as burdening the body with its weight. Yao Lao uses these effects for conditioning: adaptation under restraint is intended to make the wielder markedly stronger when the ruler is removed. (Chapters 108–109)
• Its broad, bladeless form can function as both striking weapon and shield. Xiao Yan turns it to block Han Feng's fire sword and later uses ruler-shadow formations to withstand attacks, although a sufficiently fast and powerful opponent can pierce that defense. (Chapters 638, 999, 1332, and 1489)
• It is the intended focus for the Flame Splitting Tsunami. When Dou Qi is channeled into it, its dark surface can change color and release a large ruler glow or fire pillar; Yao Lao states that the technique falls to roughly thirty percent strength without it. (Chapters 122, 999, and 1332)
• The ruler can be enveloped in Xiao Yan's Heavenly Flame during close combat, allowing the weapon to carry both the physical force of his strike and the flame at contact. This is a use of Xiao Yan's power through the ruler, not an independently demonstrated flame-producing property. (Chapter 638)
