William
William is an ambitious Ravenstein trainee who defeats Orion and tries to convert camp status into wider leadership. His belief that Atticus's reputation is exaggerated ends in a public lesson that later discourages others.
Biography
Leadership ambitions and public humiliation
William establishes his talent by defeating Orion for second rank among the third years, then survives the camp attack by hiding underground with earth. He had already tried to take group leadership from Atticus and resents the attention Atticus receives, using support from an important family member to position himself as the alternative rising youth. (Chapters 73–130)
At a later demonstration, William accepts a sword spar with Atticus while dismissing reports that an Intermediate could defeat Experts. He coats himself in earth and prepares carefully, but Atticus overwhelms him so thoroughly that “ending up like William” becomes a warning among other youths. William survives the humiliation; his brother Cerron later seeks revenge and is also defeated. (Chapters 138–257, 672)
Appearance and personality
William has thin, narrow eyes and habitually raises his chin with conspicuous pride. He is talented, calculating, ambitious, skeptical of others' achievements, and eager to use family politics to reinforce his status.
Abilities, bloodlines, and will
William is an Intermediate-rank swordsman who manipulates earth for concealment and full-body armor. The underground hiding is effective during the camp crisis, but the protective coating does not let him withstand Atticus in a direct demonstration.
