Ulithi

Ulithi is the blunt master of the darkness sanctum and one of Atticus's most invested elemental teachers. His determination to give only one demonstration collapses under the pressure of a student who learns faster than Ulithi can protect his own sense of rarity.

Biography

Teaching the darkness prodigy

Ulithi introduces himself with strict rules, demonstrates concealment in darkness, and promises brief explanations with no repetition. Atticus's rapid comprehension repeatedly shocks him until he debates withholding stronger theory simply because the boy is already too powerful. He ultimately explains mana movement through darkness constructs and additional unconventional techniques, while refusing to serve as the test subject for a method that might drain his mana. (Chapters 605–607)

Atticus later uses Ulithi's shadow-to-shadow movement in the field, validating the instruction beyond the sanctum. When Atticus returns, Ulithi protects access to him from the other masters and watches the long-awaited darkness-domain formation with tears and trembling hands. Atticus's gratitude confirms Ulithi as a genuine mentor rather than merely a training function. (Chapters 619, 811, 955)

Appearance and personality

Ulithi's detailed facial appearance is not emphasized. He is abrasive, concise, competitive with other teachers, protective of his knowledge, and deeply sentimental beneath the complaints when a worthy darkness student fulfills his hopes.

Abilities, bloodlines, and will

Ulithi can surround himself with darkness and vanish, move between shadows, circulate mana through darkness constructs, and demonstrate unusual applications of the element. His fear that Atticus could drain his mana indicates that the relevant technique transfers or siphons energy and requires a target or medium. Ulithi teaches theory but does not let Atticus test that risk on him, leaving exact rates and limits unstated. (Chapters 605–607)

Relationships

  • Atticus Ravenstein: Ulithi's exceptional student and the focus of his protective pride.
  • The other sanctum masters: Friendly rivals whom Ulithi physically blocks from claiming Atticus's attention.
