Rhexan Virex

Rhexan Virex is a Redflame Archduke who helps coordinate the major factions' hunt for Atticus. His obsession with status makes his son's failure more offensive to him than the son's death, inviting the personal retaliation he assumes his rank can prevent.

Biography

The Archdukes' hunt and House Virex's fall

Rhexan joins Edras's cross-faction meeting because the danger is serious enough to override ordinary rivalry. He spends heavily for advance knowledge of the resource-war rules and installs his weak fifth son Orvain as successor with guardians and a kill priority on Atticus. When Orvain is captured and humiliates the family, Rhexan seeks support from rival Archdukes, only to discover that they view his disgrace as entertainment rather than shared injury. (Chapters 1599–1616)

After the resource war, Rhexan interprets Atticus's contempt as another insult and plans to find his territory. He returns home to discover Atticus has killed his household and retainers while leaving the estate structures intact. Rhexan summons Archduke armor and weaponry and detonates his Redflame will, but Atticus crosses the distance before he can complete the confrontation; the next account treats Rhexan among the slaughtered major Archdukes. Appearance and personality

Rhexan carries himself with the rigid pride of a ruling Archduke, exhales heated breath, and manifests ominously red eyes when invoking his plans. He is calculating, prestige-obsessed, contemptuous of weakness, and more wounded by public humiliation than family loss.

Abilities, bloodlines, and will

Rhexan wields Archduke-rank Redflame will capable of transforming the air into a sea of fire and melting a mountain range. He can summon rank-appropriate armor and a weapon and move rapidly across his estate. These displays establish enormous destructive scale, but Atticus kills him before the source demonstrates his full technique set, costs, counters, or recovery. (Chapter 1625)

• Atticus Ravenstein: Target of Rhexan's coalition who annihilates his estate and kills him.
