Mae Calder
Mae Calder is a recurring figure whose decisions clarify the loyalties and power structures surrounding the central conflict.
Biography
A leader chooses disclosure over extinction
Mae joins the infiltrators targeting Anastasia and uses her life-sensing ability to confirm that people remain hidden on the protected hill. She raises a corpse legion during the battle, only to watch Lyanna freeze it apart. When Atticus threatens the entire Surnix continent with a descending meteor, Mae resists Rehn's impulse to talk but cannot hide her terror, exposing how loyalty collapses when retaliation expands beyond the team. (Chapters 1446–1450)
Appearance and personality
Mae is outwardly quiet and restrained, giving short answers while other leaders argue. Her trembling eyes under Atticus's meteor reveal fear more clearly than speech. Fixed coloring and clothing are not securely established. (Chapters 1446–1450)
Abilities, bloodlines, and will
She can smell or sense life through concealment and command a legion of corpses in combat. The corpus does not fully explain whether the legion is dream-born, reanimated, or summoned through a Somnera art, so its mechanism should remain uncertain. Ice freezes and shatters the bodies quickly, establishing an area-control counter. Her rank is high but not numerically stated. (Chapters 1447–1449)
Relationships
Rehn and Neresa are fellow infiltration leaders; Lyanna destroys her legion; Atticus forces the group toward confession.
