Betrayal becomes a boundary

Kira is Atticus's girlfriend before his reincarnation, but he discovers her kissing another boy on the day he expects their first kiss. The betrayal hurts him without becoming an excuse to distrust every later partner; he deliberately treats it as a lesson about character and compatibility. Later memories, including Ozeroth's mocking projection, show that the humiliation persists even as Atticus refuses to let it govern his new life. (Chapters 2–4, 287, 327, and 859)
