Fear hides behind council authority

Kaino pressures Anorah to make decisions for the resistance and gathers support among council members who distrust Atticus. His confidence rests on divine challenge rules that appear to protect gods from unaccepted attacks. Anorah calmly baits him into surrendering that protection, exposing the fear beneath his bluster and allowing her to destroy the faction threatening her authority. His death ends the political obstruction but hardens Anorah through an act Atticus recognizes as cruelly necessary. (Chapters 1376–1379 and 1412–1414)
