Grimestone
Grimestone is a recurring supporting figure whose choices clarify the pressures surrounding the principal cast and institutions.
Biography
The cost of making runes
Grimestone accepts Atticus as a student and grounds the boy's enthusiasm in the discipline's actual cost. He explains engraving, slate-based effects, Will, and the danger of overusing renewal aids, then watches Atticus advance at an abnormal pace. His instruction gives Atticus a durable technical foundation even though Grimestone largely leaves the active story after the Raven Camp lessons. (Chapters 79–81, 97, and 148)
Appearance and personality
Grimestone is presented as an older, chronically exhausted craftsman whose unkempt condition becomes a visual shorthand for the strain of prolonged rune engraving. His weary manner coexists with professional pride and genuine astonishment at Atticus's speed. (Chapters 79–81 and 154)
Abilities, bloodlines, and will
He is a practiced runesmith who engraves words or patterns into slates so mana can produce defined effects such as shields. His teaching establishes that the craft needs knowledge, suitable media, mana, concentration, and Will; artifacts that disturb Will can cripple it, while forced renewal risks harm. The corpus does not demonstrate a bloodline or combat rank for him. (Chapters 79–81, 97, and 148)
Relationships
Atticus is his exceptional pupil; Lucas later reflects the same demanding runecraft tradition.
