A wounded alpha

Arlo appears ready to confront Atticus until Hogan warns him away, forcing the reputed first ranker to measure pride against a threat he may not be able to stop. Atticus's subsequent dominance humiliates the established elites, and Arlo experiences that loss of standing as an injury to his identity as an alpha. Later students still invoke him as their first ranker, but the narrative leaves his response unresolved rather than showing a successful challenge. (Chapters 402–408, 440, and 467)
