Yi Hye-Rin's Bending Longsword

Yi Hye-Rin's Bending Longsword is a High Quality Orc-made weapon with the C-level Bending attribute. Crafted by Kim Sae-Jin for Yi Hye-Rin, it can curve according to her will, vary its attack distance, and strike along routes that are difficult to predict.

History

Delivery and reception

Sae-Jin produces the longsword as one of two promised weapons. It goes to Hye-Rin, an upper Mid Tier Knight, and is rated High Quality. Unlike the companion weapon's several attributes, this blade carries only Bending at level C: it twists and curves in response to Hye-Rin's will so that an opponent cannot easily predict its point of impact. Her enthusiastic response includes a three-page letter to its maker, and a photograph of the new weapon posted online attracts attention within Korea and abroad. (Chapter 44)

Extended-range hunting

Hye-Rin later uses the sword from the back of a Griffin during a raid on a towering Monster bird. Her mission is to blind the creature, and Bending means she does not have to close all the way to its head. The blue trajectory of her sword light snakes toward its eyes while she and the Griffin avoid its tentacles, successfully injuring the target at the opening of the battle. This is the clearest demonstration that the attribute changes practical attack distance as well as the blade's curve. (Chapter 95)

Anti-magic and vampire engagements

In an ambush against a Vampire, the longsword is described as able to distort space and slice magic. Hye-Rin uses it to deflect one conjured venom spear and then bends it through an unusual path to destroy the remaining projectiles before they reach the attackers. The scene extends the weapon's demonstrated role from physical reach to interception of magical attacks. (Chapter 144)

The blade remains in Hye-Rin's hands during the assault on Bathory. It descends alongside the rescue party's other weapons and curves around Bathory's throat, but Bathory narrowly avoids the attack, catches the sword, and throws it—and Hye-Rin—to the ground. The counter shows that an unpredictable path and extended reach do not prevent a sufficiently fast and powerful opponent from physically seizing the weapon or using it to unbalance its wielder.
